Business Standard reports that Russian trolls are spamming social media with disinformation. Paid operatives from St. Petersburg are coordinating trolls through the Telegram messaging app.
These trolls flood the social media accounts of Kremlin critics and spread Russian propaganda.
The operation has targeted politicians and general audiences in the UK, South Africa, India, and other countries.
Russian trolls are nothing new. This same troll factory gained worldwide attention in 2017 when the US Senate Intelligence Committee reported that Russian agents masqueraded as Americans and used targeted advertisements to influence US presidential elections.
Google, Apple, and Microsoft are building a passwordless future. ZDNet reports that the tech giants agreed to implement FIDO sign-in standards across their products.
How will it work? Your phone will store a passkey that will let you log in without a password.
Passkeys will be encrypted and could solve the issue of weak or reused passwords that can be easily guessed.
However, developers have to implement the FIDO standards onto their websites and applications. Users and organizations have to then adopt the new technology. It will take time and resources. For now, the best way to secure your accounts is to use a password manager.
The Hacker News reports that at least six different Russia-aligned entities launched 237 cyberattacks against Ukraine.Microsoft documented various types of malware that destroyed Ukraine’s digital resources.
Most of these malware families were data wipers, designed to overwrite data and render devices unbootable. Russian hackers also used phishing to target military entities or government officials and stole data.
Tom Burt, vice president of Microsoft, said: “Russia's use of cyberattacks appears to be strongly correlated and sometimes directly timed with its kinetic military operations targeting services and institutions crucial for civilians.”
Elon Musk declared he’ll buy Twitter, and now he’s trying to find the money for it. But what will Musk’s Twitter look like? Musk said he’ll make the platform’s algorithms open source, defeat the spam bots, and authenticate all humans.
That sounds like bad news for the Russian trolls. But is it good news for the rest of us?
In an interview with ZDNet, James Clark, executive director of Digital Rights Watch, said:
"In an age when our digital footprint is more permanent and traceable than ever before, staying anonymous is a way to maintain a private life alongside a public one online. I would also add that given Musk's history of intimidating critics and whistleblowers, I imagine there are many people who would be rightfully reluctant to upload identification documents to a platform that he controls."
