Many theories have been proposed by many scientists about why dreams.

1) Freud proposed we dream to fulfill our wishes. Dreams are representations of out unconscious desire and thoughts.

2) In the threat simulation theory, dreams are seen as a defense mechanism. For example, nightmares helps us in fright flight response.

3) The activation synthesis theory suggests dreams don't mean anything. In REM stage, that is in deep sleep stage, certain circuits in brain are activated. And when brain tries to sense these signals it results in dreams.
