Madagascar is home to many animal lineages which enjoyed greater global diversity thousands of years ago. Pygmy hippopotamus, dwarf chameleons, and of course the lemurs are all examples of old genetic pools thrown into an isolated environment and given unfettered access to adapt and evolve into crazy forms. Madagascar has been this way before humans and the mastodon. Madagascar has been a land of the lost for 88 million years.
