The National Weather Service offices in Columbia and Charleston, South Carolina have completed their storm survey investigations into the tornadoes of April 5 and April 6, 2022.
Their severe weather findings included an EF-3 tornado on the ground for 35 miles across portions of Bamberg, Allendale, and Orangeburg counties. This tornado brought storm damage to cities including Ulmer and Bowman. Damage from the destructive winds includes damaged homes, and trees. Meteorologists with the National Weather Service found evidence among the damaged trees that there may have been multiple rotating vortexes extending down from the clouds. While these were not technically multiple tornadoes because they did not reach the ground, radar signatures show the numerous rotation. Radar was also a key tool in locating damage signatures, which shows where a storm is producing damage.
Allendale County experienced multiple tornadoes, including two EF-2 tornadoes with winds upwards of 160 mph.
Over 10 tornadoes touched down in the Carolinas including in Ehrhardt (Bamberg County), Farrell Crossroads (Bamberg County), Branchville (Orangeburg County), Bowman (Orangeburg County), Aiken and Lexington counties, Allendale, Bamberg, and Orangeburg counties, Gaston (Lexington and Calhoun counties) and Manning (Clarendon County). Additional tornadoes were also confirmed in Varnville (Hampton County), Byrd and Harleyville (Dorchester County), and Stokes and Waltersboro (Colleton County).
Earlier in the day, the storm system also produced damaging storms in Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, and Mississippi.
