Best Overall: ASUS Chromebook Flip C434

Out of all the Chromebooks I've tested, the Asus Chromebook Flip C434 strikes the best balance between price, power, and features. Its two-in-one design quickly moves between laptop mode for work, stand mode great for watching YouTube, and tablet mode for browsing the web on the couch. The 14-inch, 1080p display is plenty bright and sharp, giving you somewhat of a rarity in Chromebooks—an excellent screen and impressive all-day battery life nearly 11 hours in my testing. The Intel Core m3 chip, the base model, isn't the most powerful, but it's the only option since the Core i5 and i7 models are no longer available. While using it, I didn't notice any stuttering or slowdowns until I deliberately started pushing it by opening more than 25 browser tabs at once.

Best 2-in-1: Lenovo Chromebook Duet

The Lenovo Chromebook Duet is a 10-inch tablet with a detachable keyboard and touchpad. This Lenovo Chromebook's small size might be slightly limited as a primary Chrome OS device, though you can connect to an external display via its USB-C port. However, the Lenovo Duet is a good Chromebook pick if you're looking for an affordable Chromebook for pure mobility or a secondary device that can be used in tablet mode. Its small size might seem a detriment, but the portability and the efficient Chrome OS make it worth consideration. I wouldn't necessarily call it the best Chromebook on the market, but for the cost and convenience, it's not one to count out too quickly.

Best Budget: Lenovo Flex 5i

This Chromebook is the more powerful cousin to the Flex 5 we used to recommend. That's still a fine Chromebook if you're on a budget, but the base model of the Flex 5i starts with an 11th-gen Core i3 processor instead of a Celeron chip. It's been plenty speedy for browsing the web and watching videos. The 13-inch IPS display has a nice antiglare finish, which is good because the main weakness of this machine is how its 250-nit brightness is just barely bright enough to use outdoors. The latest version of Chrome OS is well-optimized to work in all three two-in-one modes, and the Flex 5i is compatible with Lenovo's USI stylus. You can technically upgrade to the Core i5 and 8 GB of RAM with the Flex 5i.
The new 2-in-1 comes with a 14-inch touchscreen display with up to 400-nit brightness, a 12th-generation Intel Core processor i3 and i5, and a 1080p Full High Definition webcam up from 720p on the 13-inch Flex 5i.

Best for School: Acer Chromebook Spin 514

The Acer Chromebook Spin 514 feels like it should be a killer Chromebook with an AMD Ryzen processor, a versatile 2-in-1 design, and an excellent keyboard, but it manages to fall short more frequently than it succeeds. The shortcomings include relatively short battery life, a light display, and some middling components like flash storage rather than an SSD, no support for Wi-Fi 6, and a relatively weak Ryzen 3000 C-series processor. This is not to say that the Acer Chromebook Spin 514 doesn't have its high points; I love typing on its keyboard, and both the form factor and durability are outstanding, but at $599, it needs to do more to be among the best Chromebooks on the market
