The transition from the old DXR-8 to the DXR-8 Pro is not particularly revolutionary, but it is generally a good improvement. The system consists of two main components: a portable, battery-powered video monitor that you use to watch and operate the pan, tilt, and a zoom camera that stays in the nursery. The camera is 4 inches tall and 2.5 inches in diameter and resembles the original DXR-8 almost precisely. It can pan left or right at 135 degrees and tilt up or down at 95 degrees. Instead of the basic VGA of the original, it supports 720p video. It has a tiny dongle that serves as a temperature sensor. Since the camera lacks a battery, it needs to be plugged in. A primary integrated lens has a metal lens hood for some protection. To use the included 2x optical zoom lens, unscrew the hood. It is helpful to keep an eye on something across a large room. You can get a complete (and hazy) 6x magnification using the digital zoom, which has a 3x magnification range. There are ten infrared LEDs scattered around the lens to provide night vision. With the screen in standby mode, the monitor's battery life is estimated to be around ten or six hours if you leave the video playing. Expect to plug it in daily because it takes seven hours to recharge fully. Surprisingly, the 2,800mAh lithium-ion battery inside is replaceable. On Amazon, a new one costs $19.99.
The most popular VTech models are budget-friendly, entry-level models like the VM5271-2, a straightforward design with two fixed cameras and a five-inch parent monitor. In general, parental opinions on VTech video monitors are, regrettably, inconsistent. Many parents discovered that it was only effective for a brief period before they encountered problems with the camera's connection to the parent unit, issues with the battery indicators not working, poor picture quality, and sound that stopped working. Kudos to VTech for including a parent unit since most WiFi baby monitors require you to bring your device. There are a few WiFi or streaming baby monitors made by VTech. These cameras feature a 5" touch screen monitor and stream to a smartphone or tablet. For $162, you can get the VM981 with a 720p high definition camera, ten times the normal zoom, and infrared night vision. The VM991 adds pan/tilt/zoom, wall mounting, and motion alert. Costing $212, Parents generally have mixed opinions about VTech video monitors; most people are satisfied with the monitor's basic video quality for its price of around $100. But don't anticipate a picture in HD quality. Critics also lament the short battery life of VTech's parent units, the absence of a belt clip, and the inability to remotely activate the lullabies that the camera plays. In addition, the VOX feature receives inconsistent parental feedback. The cameras that mimic owls or bears are particularly adorable on some VTech monitors, but that's about it.
The Miku Pro Smart Baby Monitor is ideal for worried parents. It has built-in sensors to check for regular respiration without needing specialized clothing or wearables, and it streams high-quality audio and video to your smartphone. Additionally, it keeps an eye out for movement and sends alerts when a child is moving. It costs $399, making it a close competitor to our Editors' Choice winner, the $379 Nanit Pro Complete Monitoring System, but it lacks a floor stand and has fewer features overall.
