Imagine going on another star and see Earth under an angle of about 1 arcsecond.
An arcsecond is defined as the 3600th part of a degree, and we could simply say that the width of your little finger at arm's length is 1 to 1.5 degrees, so that you have an idea of how small the distance of the earth from the sun would be in that case.
So, imagine being on that star.
You will then know that you are a Parsec away from earth.
This is the definition for parsec. 1 megaparsec is 1 million parsecs.
Now, the mean distance between two galaxies in our universe is about 5 Megaparsecs.
It means that, if you left the Milky Way, you would have to travel about 5 Megaparsecs to reach another galaxy.
This is how lonely galaxies are.
