Hi! Let’s talk about the biggest cybersecurity news of the week — Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan. Yep, cybersecurity and politics go hand in hand now.
Just hours before the American House speaker set foot on Taiwanese soil to express her support, three official Taiwanese websites went dark. The official website for Taiwan’s presidential office suffered a distributed denial-of-service attack and went down for about 20 minutes. Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry, its Ministry of National Defense, and the Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport websites were also targeted.
In a DDoS attack, a network of infected computers attack their target with enormous amounts of traffic, leaving legitimate users unable to access the website.
The Chinese government was the first suspect for the attacks because the origin for most IP addresses attacking the websites seemed to be coming from China and Russia. Not to mention, China was outraged about Pelosi's visit, as it considers Taiwan part of its territory.
However, cybersecurity researchers are unconvinced. According to some, the attacks are more likely to have been carried out by Chinese hacktivists considering the uncoordinated, random, and relatively unsophisticated nature of the attacks.
It wouldn't be the first time Taiwan was a target of cyberattacks during critical periods like elections or political crises.
Whether or not this attack was carried out by the Chinese government or independent hacktivists, some cybersecurity experts think that Taiwan isn’t out of the woods yet. Pelosi’s visit might kick China’s cyberespionage into “overdrive.”
That’s all folks! Thanks for watching, and stay safe out there.
