The M5 is a Hungarian motorway connecting the capital Budapest with Röszke at the southern border of Serbia.
The M5 PPP Infrastructure project covers design, construction, financing, operation and maintenance of a 2x2 lane motorway with a total length of 156.5 km. The State of Hungary is the client for this concession and AKA Zrt. (Alföld Koncessziós Autópálya Zrt.), a group company of STRABAG, is the concessionaire.
The road was constructed in 3 phases between 1996 and 2006:
• Phase I: 96.1 km Budapest -Kiskunfélegyhaza
• Phase II: 45.7 km Kiskunfélegyhaza-Szeged
• Phase III: 14.7 km Szeged until the southern border to Serbia
The concession period is 35 years and lasts until 2031. During this period the concession company AKA Zrt. and its operator A-WAY Zrt. are responsible for:
• emergency and accident response
• maintenance of motorway, road signs and facilities
• landscaping / greenkeeping
• winter maintenance
• inspection service
• cleaning works of motorway
