The wire belt / clothing clips that are on camera equipment, camping equipment, etc. have very strong wire bails that are real fingernail breakers.
In the past I have bent the clip until it was looser, but then it's looser.
I found I can put a zipper pull on the clip and use that to help open it. No clip strength is lost and the pull stays out of the way behind clothes until needed.
