In this week’s episode, let’s talk about the terrifying dystopian nightmare that is Pegasus spyware.
Latest news suggests that the Israeli spyware targeted top European Union officials. EU Justice Commissioner Didier Reynders sent a letter to European lawmaker Sophie in 't Veld. In the letter seen by Reuters, which reported on the story, Reynders said that Apple warned him last year that his iPhone had potentially been hacked using Pegasus.
This triggered an investigation of European Commission employees’ devices, including Reynders’. While the investigation didn’t find conclusive proof that the devices of EU staff were hacked, investigators discovered "indicators of compromise." This is a term security researchers use to describe that evidence of the hack does exist.
Pegasus is spyware developed by the NSO Group, Israeli-based cyberarms firm. Pegasus is its flagship product. It's immensely powerful and nearly impossible to detect or remove.
Once your device is infected, Pegasus has root access to your phone. That means every message you send or receive, password you type, or phone call you make is being recorded. It can also switch on your camera and microphone any time and track your location through GPS.
What’s terrifying about the spyware is that it can get into your phone without any interaction on your part in a so-called “zero-click attack.” It can be installed wirelessly if the victim is nearby or even via a phone call, without the recipient ever answering.
The NSO Group claims to sell Pegasus to authorized and vetted governments only. Supposedly, the aim of this technology is to fight terror and crime. Despite the claims, a massive data leak in 2021 revealed that the spyware was used to target activists, journalists, and political leaders, negatively impacting human rights across the globe.
Reports are still coming out about the depth of the surveillance. Just last week, a report by researchers at Citizen Lab at the University of Toronto revealed that Thai police targeted democracy activists with Pegasus.
If you suspect that you may have been a target of the spyware, Amnesty International’s Security Lab has developed a method that will let someone scan their iPhone or Android phone for any signs of Pegasus.
