The lone signal here has 4 pairs of Safetran 12x24 inch lights and an NEG electronic bell.
On May 17th, I got up, documented the long out-of-service Teardrop bell on the northside of Mobile, and then went down to the Griswold cantilevers to wait for a train. Unfortunately for me, it turns out that the intermodal train that the state docks used to run out of the port has been rerouted onto the CSX NO&M Sub, and no longer runs that way anymore. As such, after a few hours of waiting for nothing, I decided to grab some food and then head over to the NO&M Sub near downtown Mobile to see if I could at least get something.
Turns-out I would wind-up hitting it at a good time this evening. Here we see a local freight returning to the yard in Mobile with a GP40-2 for power.
This crossing is a pretty neat one, even if the equipment here is a bit boring. The reason why I say it's neat is because this crossing is a one-signal wonder! It appears that due to the intersection on the other side of the crossing, CSX didn't want to install a signal over there, so they just installed the one cantilever here back in the early 2000s. The only major change here is to the bell, and the original General Signals e-bell here appears to have only been replaced sometime after street view last came through this crossing in 2019. Since then, however, no major changes have occurred here thankfully.
As far as I'm aware, this crossing is also one of the last three gateless crossings along the NO&M Subdivision, and all three of them are basically right next to each other along this stretch of track in Mobile. I know there used to be some along the line out in Mississippi, but I believe those are all long gone now.
