Mayo Clinic Minute - What drowning doesn’t look like

Dr. Michael Boniface, Emergency Medicine, FL NOTE: it’s been in the news that there will NOT be enough lifeguards this year, and also a lack of chlorine - making public swimming a problem this year. Drowning does not look like it does in the movies. It's fast, it's silent and more than 3,900 American children die of drowning each year, for an average of 11 deaths each day, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. There are roughly another 8,000 nonfatal drownings annually, which can cause brain damage and other serious outcomes, like long-term disabilities, according to the CDC.

For the safety of its patients, staff and visitors, Mayo Clinic has strict masking policies in place. Anyone shown without a mask was recorded prior to COVID-19 or recorded in an area not designated for patient care, where social distancing and other safety protocols were followed.
