Jefferson Street (US 90) Railroad Crossing, Quincy, FL

*originally recorded on 3-29-22*

Signal on the left: a Safetran mechanical bell.
Signal on the right: a WRRS mechanical bell.

After watching TA-Local shove back up the branch, I waited around at Adams Street (the northernmost crossing on the branch) for them to finish working the customer there. After a bit of waiting, they finished-up working and began to head back towards the Tallahassee Sub, so I quickly hopped on down to this crossing and set-up. After just a little bit of waiting, TA-Local came rolling through this crossing, though apparently the detection circuit on the northern side of the crossing is quite short as they had to slow to a crawl, if not come to a complete stop, to have the crossing activate in time.

This crossing is another excellent one, and one I'd been wanting to record since I first saw it back in 2016. This crossing is a bell-only one, and was the first bell-only crossing with active signals I ever saw, though I don't know if the signals would've had lights and/or gates on them originally or not. All I know is that both bells appear to be from the SCL, I believe with the WRRS bell predating the Safetran bell here, and it appears that CSX installed the current masts here in either the 80s or 90s. Since then, not too much has changed, which is great to see. Seems like it's fairly rare to find bell-only crossings with mechanical bells these days, so I'm glad to see the pair here are still around. If you look closely, you can also see the WRRS bell on the closer signal rocking the mast as it rings.
It appears that the traffic lights at the neighboring intersection here aren't interlocked with the crossing, for some reason, despite featuring no turn black-out signs for Pat Thomas Parkway, given how long the signals for Jefferson Street remain green after the crossing has activated.
All in all though, this is a really neat crossing and I'm quite glad to have finally been able to record it as well. Hopefully these mechanical bells remain around here for many more years to come.
