Summer is a beautiful period for...tanning! But how does our skin tan?
Tanning takes place when the pigment in your skin reacts to ultraviolet light.
Tanning occurs in the skin’s outermost layer, the epidermis.
In it, there are some special cells called melanocytes.
When exposed to UV-B light, melanocytes produce melanin.
It is a pigment that is ultimately responsible for tanning your skin.
But UV light can be dangerous.
That's why when exposed to UV-A ray, melanin oxidizes or darkens.
This darkening is a actually a way of protecting you from too much UV light.
