How to Recover Overwritten Files

Did you accidentally overwrite some important files? Do not worry, there is a chance you can recover these files back. You have to use free software called PhotoRec to recover the overwritten files. You can try it by following the steps, as shown in this video.

1. Open a web browser on your computer
2. Type http://www.cgsecurity.org in the address bar and press the Enter key on your keyboard.
3. Click on the PhotoRec text link.
4. Scroll down and click on the Download TestDisk & PhotoRec link.
5. On the Next page, click on the Windows 64-bit text link.
6. Insert an external USB drive into your computer, and select it to save this zip file.
7. Click on the Save button.
8. Open the location of the saved zip file and right-click on it.
9. From the drop-down list, click on the Extract All.
10. In the testdisk folder, scroll down and double click on the testdisk_win dot exe file.
11. Click on the Yes button to allow the permissions.
12. Press the Enter Key,
13. Use the down arrow key to select your disk, like here I am selecting PhysicalDrive1 – 15 GB which is my external USB drive, and want to recover the overwritten file from this drive.
14. After selecting the drive press Enter Key to Proceed.
15. Now it is showing EFI GPT partition is detected and by default it has selected it.
16. Press the Enter Key and you will notice that the Analyse is selected on the Next screen. So, Press the Enter Key again.
17. On the Next Screen, Quick Search is selected press the Enter Key and when it is showing P MS Data is selected which will be your drive.
18. Cross-check before proceeding further that you have selected the right drive from which you want to recover the overwritten files.
19. Then, press the Enter key on your keyboard to continue.
20. Now you will see the Deeper Search at the bottom is selected, press the Enter Key.
21. This will start Analyse Cylinder process, and this process will take time to complete. The analyse process time will depend on the size of your hard drive and detected data. It may take many hours to complete.
22. Close the testdisk command prompt window.
23. Double click on the photorec_win.exe file.
24. Click on the Yes button.
25. Select your drive to recover the Overwritten files., and press the Enter key on your keyboard.
26. Make sure your Data partition is selected and press the Enter Key.
27. Read carefully the Screen instructions and press the Enter key whenever is asked to proceed to the next screen.
28. Scroll down and select the destination to save the recovered files, press the Enter key.
29. This will start recovering the files from the drive and it will take time to complete this process.
30. Once completed, you will see a message of recovered files status and also will show you a path of recovered files saved folder.
31. Close the command prompt window.
32. Open the recovered files folder, and you will find back your old files here.
