Google’s data center in Omaha experienced an electrical explosion that critically injured three electricians and allegedly caused outages at some of the company’s services.
Three workers were accessing an electrical cabinet when, all of a sudden, an arc flash appeared.
All of the electricians suffered burns, but luckily, they experienced no life-threatening injuries.
An arc flash indicates that a powerful electrical current missed its intended destination. Such flashes can emit heat as high as 19,426 C.
Officials claim that the incident, which happened in one of the largest Google data centers employing more than 900 people, was caused by “some sort of electrical issue.” The investigation is ongoing.
The outage mostly impacted the Google Search service. Google Maps and YouTube also faced minor disturbances.
However, a Google spokesperson said that service disruptions were the result of an internal error unrelated to the incident. The company hasn’t officially announced any outage-related disruptions either.
It is not the first recent disruption in large companies’ data centers. In the UK, scorching temperatures brought down facilities belonging to Google Cloud and Oracle.
