Estate Sale Finds - Craftsman Axe - Clean & Tighten Head

Published 6/8/21
I made a trip to the Estate Sale Barn by Schoolcraft about two months ago. I found an axe with a nice handle and a decent head. It was rusty and the handle was dirty. Nothing really wrong with it so I gave the nice lady $5.00 and left with my $9.00 axe.
Why did I only pay $5.00? It was clearly marked $9.00.
I paid $5.00 because I go there frequently and know when they are having a sale because I liked their Facebook page and I get notifications. 😁

As to why I cleaned up the axe. Just like the sledge I like the feel of a clean, BLO sealed, and waxed wooden handle.
It’s a personal thing. Using a wooden handled tool has always been a problem for me. The handles when new are coated with varnish. On a screwdriver it keeps the handle from drying out and splitting. It also provided a good grip. Unfortunately it causes blisters if your hand slips during for heavy work.
A axe is, by definition, heavy work.
When I’m swinging a axe I grip the butt end with my left hand and grasp near the head with my right. Then I raise the axe and swing it in an arc while sliding my right hand down toward the butt of the handle. That sliding will raise a blister very quickly.
When I first put Boiled Linseed Oil on a handle it was pretty much the same as varnish but it quickly rubbed into the wood and became much smoother and less sticky. Then I tried paste wax on the handle and the difference was like night and day. No more blisters. It also made the handle water resistant and kept it from checking or staining.
I have been doing the same thing ever since. 😁😎
