Letās talk about major takedowns, busts, and heroic saves that happened in the cybersecurity world last week!
First, letās start with some good news. The U.S. law enforcement announced that the agency took down SSNDOB. SSNDOB is a group of notorious online marketplaces that were selling the personal information of millions of Americans. The SSNDOB websites were active for nearly a decade before the takedown.
Information included names, dates of birth, credit card numbers, and Social Security numbers.
The Justice Department estimates that SSNDOB listed the personal information of about 24 million US residents.
In other wholesome news, FBI director Christopher Wray said that the agency managed to fend off a planned cyberattack on Boston Children's Hospital. Last August, the FBI got a tip about an attack backed by the Iranian government.
Reacting swiftly, they managed to mitigate the attack. Wray didnāt go into detail about the motive or type of attack, but he noted that Iran and other countries have been hiring cyber mercenaries to conduct attacks on their behalf.
Unfortunately, this cyberattack is not the first to affect the hospital. In 2014, Martin Gottesfeld launched a cyberattack that disrupted its network for at least two weeks and cost about $600,000.
Speaking of money, letās talk about financial apps. According to a recent report by Zimperium, trojans hidden in benign-looking apps are targeting hundreds of banking apps, potentially affecting over a billion users.
Ten of the most prolific banking trojans like Teabot, Octo, and Flubot can affect 639 different financial applications including PhonePe, Binance, and Cash App. The trojans carry out on-device fraud, which means creating bogus transactions to steal money directly from the victim's devices.
To protect yourself from accidentally downloading a malicious app, make sure you read up on the app first. Check its reviews and number of downloads, and download apps from legitimate app stores only.
But donāt lose hope yet. One of the top 10 trojans from the report has been taken down. An international global law enforcement operation involving 11 countries managed to bring down the notorious FluBot mobile malware.
According to the Europol announcement, this Android malware has been spreading aggressively through SMS, stealing passwords, online banking details and other sensitive information from infected smartphones across the world.
This is definitely great news ā according to a report by ThreatFabric, FluBot, also known as Cabassous, was the second most active banking trojan on Android.
