Cast iron castings are seldom perfect. Inexpensive tools are seldom perfect. This vise is not perfect. It will be much better when I’m done.
When a mold is poured iron leaks out of the mold into the gaps in the mold left by mismatched cores or loose sections of sand. This is called flash. My first job at the foundry was to grind off the flash and the marks left by breaking off the sprues and gates that are from the channels that iron flows through the mold on it’s way to filling the mold.
I ground thousands of 119’s. A 119 is the casting used to make powersteering pumps in the 60’s and 70’s before they became plastic and stamped pot metal.
I also ground Fireburners. Named for the action of the massive number of oil sand cores that burned when they were poured they were the main body of an compressor for automotive air conditioners. Again in the 60’s & 70’s. Weighing about 15 to 20 lbs they were big, but easily ground.
Must be the Littlestown Hardware & Foundry wasn’t as interested in having the flash ground off as I was. 😁😎
