Amazing Physics Objects That will Hurt Your Brain! 1

Hi Everyone :)
Welcome back!

I get asked often: "Where did you get all this stuff?" My goal is to share the real magic of science and physics- and to this end I will update here (and in my store) suggestions on where to get some of these toys, kinetic art pieces, and scientific curiosities for yourself.
Purchasing items from the links on these pages will help support my IG page of science and wonder.

πŸ‘‰πŸ» Wireframe Ambiguous Cube: another innovation of the ambiguous object illusion invented by mathematician Kokichi Sugihara of Meiji University- this time a 3D frame of a cube transforms to a cylinder!

πŸ‘‰πŸ» Reflection and Refraction of a Cyan Laser Pointer: a new affordable wavelength laser pointer that just came in the market- 488nm producing a beautiful hue of blue. The beam is made brightly visible as internal reflection constrains most of the laser light to propagate along the interior of this block of acrylic.

πŸ‘‰πŸ» Locomotion Anamorphic Cup & Saucer: an amazing combination of barrier grid animation and anamorphic projection rendered on elegant porcelain.

πŸ‘‰πŸ» Dot Animation Card: a unique version of barrier-grid (kinegram) animation where a matrix of holes allows only some of the dots on the covered card to show in succession producing the appearance of motion.

πŸ‘‰πŸ» Phonotrope Spinner: When viewed through video from a smartphone an animated Pikachu springs into motion.

πŸ‘‰πŸ» 3D WordFlip Sculpture: from one point of view my logo appears, rotate 90 degrees and the sculpture reveals my tagline phrase β€œreal magic”.

πŸ‘‰πŸ» Circularly Polarized Reflecting Scarab: the iridescent jewel scarabs like this one (Chrysina Gloriosa) have a very rare property: they reflect only circularly polarized light!

πŸ‘‰πŸ» Dymaxion Map: math fun with this unique mapping of the Earth where the globe is projected onto an icosahedron and then unfolded onto two dimensions. Invented by the famous architect R. Buckminster Fuller, the Dymaxion projection map is designed such that it does not have a β€œright way up” and showing the continents as β€œone island Earth”. This mapping also produces less distortion of relative areas and shapes- note here that Greenland looks, correctly, much smaller than Africa- unlike what is seen on many world maps where they look the same size. This version, designed by Brendan Ravenhill, uses flat magnets to allow a very satisfying transformation between the flat 2D net and the 3D icosahedron β€œglobe”.

πŸ‘‰πŸ» Dot Animation Card (2)

πŸ‘‰πŸ» Thermochromic Constellation Mug: three of my favorite things combined! - coffee, astronomy, and a color changing physics mug. The color change employs lueco dyes, thermochromic chemicals that have two reversible forms, one colorless.

πŸ‘‰πŸ» Transit of Mercury: remembering the last time something got in front of the sun! The tiny silhouette of the innermost planet Mercury seen against the disc of the Sun. The magnified image is projected using a 4 inch reflecting telescope outfitted with a repurposed lens from an old 35mm slide projector. Note the presence of a small Sun spot which is much larger than Mercury! Transits of Mercury happen about 13 times a century- the next two will happen in 2019 and then not again until 2032. This telescope was constructed by my father in 1957 and has seen a few transits. A favorite "physics toy"

πŸ‘‰πŸ» Mini Wind Turbine: self-contained miniature horizontal axis wind turbine generates enough power to light three LEDs.

πŸ‘‰πŸ» Magnetic Tractor: special configuration of permanent magnetic poles captures a dipole magnet without contact. Only works in 2D but cool nonetheless!

πŸ‘‰πŸ» Magnetic Equilibrium Symmetry: small magnets repel each other while attracted to the big one in the center. Fun "maker" toy acquired at a science teacher conference.

πŸ‘‰πŸ» Heart Gears
